Yellow Butterfly (for Emma)

Every moment gives a gift
An opportunity to see
A yellow butterfly land
On the pool deck to give
The daughter a smile
She seemed to have lost.

Happy birthday my sweet girl.

The Week in Review (8/11/18) – New Beginnings and Old Connections

Original followers of the SailorPoet blog now retitled Pointed Home may recall The Week in Review feature where I would reflect on what was written the week prior, look ahead to my writing plans for the week, share a multitude of links, and occasionally offer a reflection on what the week meant to me.

Its back. Over the last year, I have deconstructed and reconstructed my life. No need to go into details here, as I develop my new blog, MySevenStoreys (https://mysevenstoreys.blog/), I suspect enough of that story will be revealed to help followers of my writing understand some meaning behind the words. I note the important thing this week bringing back this feature: new connections and reconnections. From Otters to Bobcats, Domers to Norfolkians, Baristas to Sailors, I reflect with gratitude on all who have believed in me and stuck around.

So, what went down last week? First an invitation to the Go Dog Go Cafe and the return of my good friend Gina, one of the original baristas who has resumed her reflections on the week at the Cafe with her Come Sit With Me series. The Baristas at the cafe, new and old, are thrilled to have Gina back after a particularly trying year for her:

Notice Me, Little Things

“Notice me,”
Little things say,
“Fit me,
Somewhere.”

“You will fit
Somewhere,”
I whisper,
“Notice me.”

Tiny fragments of sea shells
Once perfect for collectors
Now inhabit the sand
The Sea’s metamorphosis
Perfection for this moment
Not needing to be picked
Not needing to be paraded
Alongside perfect conches
Needing to be seen
Needing to be known
If only for this moment.

Smooth purple rings exposed
Underneath the surface
Show a structure strong,
Endured, now on the surface
Stating their presence.

I know where
You will fit:
Beside me
On the sand

Among friends
Ground down
Not to nothing
But into earth

Hold us up
“You do,”
Whispers
“I do.”

Tea with Tumnus

with great appreciation to Yeats and Berninger

My love we will go, we will go, you and I
Away into the dismantled cedar woods,
The reconstructed closet where the Mother
Of the House boxes and stores memory.
We can push through the hanging coats hiding
The best secret, my love, let’s go, let’s go.

Some didn’t believe in Lucy when she returned
The same moment she left, even with Tumnus’
Tea stain on her collar, but broken windows
Build solidarity in the quickest way, Innocents.
We can push through moth-eaten coats hiding
The best secret, my love, let’s go, let’s go.

I believe enough to craft a memory of snow
Whisper so feint I do not know from where we came
Nor know to where we will go, only a quiet so clear
We hear a solitary bird sing, longing for his love, we
Discover warmth that melts coldness in our hearts
Uncovering the best secrets, my love, let’s go, let’s go.

You and I, we’ll set out into the shimmering world
Blood flushing our cheeks, red like roses
Our footsteps a new Kingdom’s first definition
Snow a down coat softening all life’s sharp edges
Tonight, come be my Tumnus, serve me
The best secret, my love, let’s go, let’s go.

Always Remember (1985: Age 15)

Always Remember
September 10, 1985

Summertime is gone
With it the sunshine
There will be a new dawn
With it new sunshine

Life does not end
With one season
Look around the bend
You will see the reasons

Don’t forget your new found friends
Or your old renewed friendships
Never forget our summertime trends
Be ready to sail on new ships

Life is meant for living and loving
Keep on learning and discovering

You must carry on
Without written lines
Because there comes a new dawn
And with it new sunshine

Remember trust and love
And with them patience
You will see a white dove
True love will make sense

Remember, Summertime is gone
With it the warm sunshine
Soon comes the awaited dawn
With it warmer sunshine

… and so it began…

Catch a Firefly

Come and catch a firefly with me
Like we are children playing free
Alone in a field designed for us
The grass, the trees, the flowers,
Perfection. What shall we do with it?
Put it in a jar, poked holes in lid,
Watch it become our lantern?
Or watch it languish alone?

Dare we lift the lid, reach inside,
Draw the firefly out to jar’s rim
Then sit together and just watch?
Eyes open, we await the exact moment
When it will choose to take flight,
Trace a swift arc around our field
Recapture enough lost time to then
Light up a whole universe within.

We will each reach out our hands
To catch it again, this light
Passing through our fingers like air.
I close my eyes, like a blind man
Turn my fingers to your skin and trace
The wholeness of a moment I sought
When I became aware of light spilling
Down the back of my soul, needing capture.
